Polyurea Color Steel Roofing Systems: Standard Construction Process & Troubleshooting

2026-04-23

With the increasing years of service of industrial plants, rust and leakage problems on color steel tile roofs have become frequent. Polyurea materials have become the preferred solution for color steel tile renovation due to their advantages such as high elasticity, corrosion resistance, and integrated waterproofing and anti-corrosion. However, "30% material, 70% construction" - incorrect operations directly lead to coating blistering and peeling. As a professional Polyurea Manufacturer, today we will break down the entire construction process for you.

Substrate Treatment is the Key

  • It is strictly forbidden to spray polyurea directly on rusty, dusty, or oily color steel tiles. The rust layer must be removed by grinding to expose the metallic luster.
  • For perforated rusted areas, if the situation is slight, polyurea with reinforcing fabric can be used for repair; if severe, the tiles need to be replaced.

Primer Selection Matters

  • A special metal primer must be applied to the surface of the color steel tiles to enhance adhesion.
  • Spray polyurea after the primer is dry, strictly following the product instructions for the interval time (usually <24 hours).

Treatment of Laps and Bolts

  • All lap joints and screw fastenings need to be pre-reinforced with special Polyurea Sealant.
  • Screw heads must be ground flat and covered to avoid sharp points piercing the coating.

Safety Protection is Essential

  • Polyurea spraying produces mist, so construction personnel must wear supplied-air masks, protective clothing, and goggles.
  • Open flames are strictly prohibited on site, and sufficient fire extinguishers must be equipped.

Standard Construction Method for Color Steel Tile Roofs (7-Step Method)

Step 1: Substrate Treatment

  • Remove debris and dust, and check all rust spots.
  • For large areas of rust: use an electric wire brush to grind to St3 level.
  • After cleaning, use a vacuum cleaner or high-pressure air to blow it clean.

Step 2: Damage Repair

  • For cracks and holes: use polyurea reinforcement to make a flush repair.
  • For large areas of deformed tiles: it is recommended to replace them locally or add steel backing plates.

Step 3: Apply Primer

  • Roll or spray metal-specific primer to cover evenly without missing spots. Consumption is about 0.15kg/㎡.
  • After the primer is dry to the touch, be sure to spray polyurea within 24 hours, and plan the process lap time well.

Step 4: Edge Protection

  • For nodes such as glass and equipment components, carry out protection treatment in advance to prevent polyurea splatter contamination.

Step 5: Polyurea Spraying

  • Preheat the equipment to the specified temperature (A/B components separately at 65~75℃).
  • Keep the spray gun 40~60cm away from the substrate, move evenly perpendicular to the surface, with 50% overlap for each pass.
  • Spray to the designed thickness (usually 1.0~1.5mm) at once, without layering. Pay attention to the overlapping parts of the color steel tiles. If there are blind spots in spraying, a "one fabric, two coats" transition treatment should be done in advance.

Step 6: Thickness Inspection

  • Use a professional thickness gauge to check at any time to ensure the uniformity of the thickness.

Step 7: Topcoat Spraying

  • Spray the topcoat within 24 hours after spraying to prevent long-term exposure of the polyurea from affecting interlayer adhesion.

Step 8: Curing and Acceptance

  • Acceptance criteria: no blisters, no peeling, no leaks detected, adhesion ≥ 2.5MPa (pull-off method).

Common Problems and Solutions

Why Choose Our Polyurea?

  • Military-grade Quality:Solid content ≥ 98%, environmentally friendly and durable.
  • Super Long Weather Resistance:Aliphatic polyurea color retention ≥ 10 years, aromatic polyurea is cost-effective.
  • Technical Support:From scheme design to construction supervision, the manufacturer follows up throughout the process.

Professional Tips

Polyurea construction has high requirements for equipment and experience. It is recommended to prioritize construction teams recommended or certified by the manufacturer to avoid failure caused by "guerrilla"-style operations.
